Serrated Shredding Hammers
Our unique, serrated shredding hammers use their jagged edges to pulverize materials fed into the shredder hopper and reduce it by 20:1. The result is a fine “pre-composted” mulch that can enrich your garden soil. Hammers are reversible and can also be rehung from the opposite hole to provide fresh surfaces for chewing up materials up to 1.5” in diameter.
Self-Feeding Action
A large vertically oriented hopper, a precisely-angled heavy-duty chipping knife, and a powerful air channel work together to pull branches into the chipping hopper and blast wood chips out the discharge. Most materials will self-feed, so once you drop a branch in, you're free to get the next one. No force feeding required!
Oversized Hoppers
The shredder hopper opening is 19" x 17", big enough to accept multiple stalks up to 1.5" thick along with side branches and leaves. The chipper opening (8" x 14") accepts branches up to 5" in diameter.

Made of high-carbon/high-chromium forged alloy tool steel, our knives hold an edge longer than those on "bargain" chippers. Still, as with any cutting tool, keeping a sharp edge is important for maintaining peak performance. We recommend keeping an extra on hand so you can minimize downtime.

Does a great job, but improvements could be made
Definitely a bit of a beast when shredding, limbs that have a lot of sideways branches need a bit of processing by yourself before they'll fit through. A great job in size reduction. Engine is just a little bit underpowered for continuous heavy use. Battery 'broke' within 1st day (0.0volts) but it's very easy to start by hand. As others have mentioned, bottom discharge is a little bit of a hassle, but not overwhelmingly so. Not overly noisy for the work it does. Short of the wife, best investment I've ever made, should have bought one 20 years ago.
Lives up to it’s expectations
We own 5.5 acres with lots of trees. It has taken up to a 5” log with no problems. The power is unbelievable. I chipped both oak and bamboo that had been cut for over 18 months with no problem. I ran out of gas while mulching/chipping and the material jammed the machine. I was able to unclog the machine by removing 2 bolts. Was completed start to finish and re mulching in 10 minutes. First piece of DR power equipment I have owned and won’t be the last. Waited 8 weeks for delivery but am very pleased.
Great machine so far!
I was wondering whether this machine was worth $3000 but I'm very excited so far. I gave the chipper / shredder 5 stars. I would give manufacturing and delivery a 1 star. Several delays and I eventually canceled the towing package because of long lead times. The machine arrives almost fully assembled on a large pallet
501 chipper shredder
This is the tool Ive been searching for! Delivered on time started right up tackled about 15 yards of built up lawn and yard debris so far without issue. Very powerful safety awareness during operation commands your respect. Grabs sticks and debris and devours in an instant. Large diameter branches are a bit slow with the chipper but most stuff goes in the shredder.
Great Equipment
Recently purchased a Pro XL501 chipper/shredder and finally took it out on its maiden voyage. WOW! What an awesome machine! Chips green hardwood and softwood like a champ. Shreds small branches and saplings into mulch sized pieces. I haven't had a chance to try it on dry wood yet but I have no doubt that it will perform equally well and live up to DR's high standards. For anyone with a need to clean up their property of deadfall lawn and garden trimmings and small trees I would absolutely recommend this machine.
Q.Where is the spark plug located?
A.Thank you for your question. Spark plugs are located at the top of the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine. They are typically protected by a plug cover.

Q.Does this ship fully assembled? If no, what assembly is generally required? Does it require tuning or other break-in activity? Is the tow pin included for the standard hitch assembly? For the electric start there must be a battery. How is the battery powered/regenerated?
A.Thank you for reaching out. No, it is not fully assembled when shipped. The hopper needs to be attached. With the electric start model you would need to connect the battery. The manual does state to check the knife before use. Which is a good habit to have to ensure nothing has become lodged in the knife or made it loose during a previous use. You should always check the oil level before usage as well. The pin hitch is standard for this machine. You can upgrade to a road tow package or model. The battery charges while the machine is in use. If you are not going to use the machine for an extended period of time it would be best to put the battery on a trickle charger. Preferable out of a cold area.

Q.Does the engine require rejetting to use at an altitude of 8,600 ft? What is the approximate run time on a tank of fuel? Can it be setup to produce a smaller discharge chip size?
A.Thank you for your questions. It would be recommended to use a high altitude kit. The run time would be based on the materials being processed. Thicker branches and organic waste would put a heavier load on the engine making the tank of gas last a shorter amount of time in comparison to processing lighter branches and organic waste. We do not currently have screens that would make the chips larger or smaller for this model.
